Wagyu wonders, fresh sushi and laid-back charm
If you’re in or around Battersea and fancy treating yourself to something special, you need to try Kibou on Northcote Road. It’s a Japanese restaurant that strikes a great balance between cool and welcoming. The space looks brilliant, with cherry blossoms overhead and colourful Tokyo-style murals on the walls, but it doesn’t feel over the top. Just warm, relaxed and easy to enjoy.
Now let’s talk wagyu, because that’s where Kibou really shines. You can tell they care about quality, and the wagyu beef dishes are a real highlight. The wagyu gyoza are something else. Crisp on the outside, juicy and rich on the inside, and packed with that proper buttery flavour you expect from good wagyu. It’s comforting and indulgent in the best way.
Then there’s the wagyu tataki, which is probably my personal favourite. Thinly sliced, just lightly seared, and served with a fresh citrus dressing that cuts through the richness perfectly. It’s one of those dishes you think you’ll share, but secretly want all to yourself.
The rest of the menu doesn’t disappoint either. The sushi is fresh, generous and well presented. The volcano roll in particular is a crowd pleaser. There’s also ramen, bao buns, katsu curry, poke bowls and more. Plus, veggie and vegan options are clearly marked, which makes things easy if you’re with a group.
The drinks are spot on too. There’s a good selection of Japanese whisky, sake and a few cocktails with a Japanese twist. Whether you’re going in for a quick bite or planning to make a night of it, the drinks menu fits right in.
Service is friendly and relaxed. You’re not rushed, but you’re never left waiting either. If you’d rather eat at home, they’ve got delivery and click and collect sorted as well. That said, the atmosphere in the restaurant really adds to the whole experience, so it’s worth booking a table if you can.
All in all, Kibou Battersea is a great shout. Whether you’re heading there for the wagyu, the sushi or just a laid-back evening with good food and drinks, you’ll walk away happy. Definitely one to have on your radar.
